A foggy morning gave me a perfect background to create a high-key image of King Penguins gathering on the beach. By using the high-key technique I could erase the distractions on the beach such as seaweed or darker sand. I could also draw attention to the dark feet of and outlines of the penguins as they formed a tight S-curve along the water. The stances of the two penguins at the end of the S-curve are close the curve: the one in the foreground is slightly separated from the others in a graceful preening stance while the one in the distant background appears to have changed its mind. It is the only penguin in the image with its black back turned towards the viewer. Soft reflections in the foreground and a subtle blue sky in the background help draw the viewer's eye around the frame. I got the image using a monopod held high above my head for the perspective and triggered the shutter using a remote cable.
