High Dive

n the frenzy of crossing the Mara River, a wildebeest jumped from the edge of a high river bank rather than waiting in line to descend to the water's edge. His jump created a column of muddy water that splashed upwards about 30 feet into the air. I got the image from a safari vehicle positioned on the opposite bank. From my vantage point on the opposite bank, the frenzy of hundreds of wildebeest attempting to squeeze into a few gullies leading to the water's edge was impressive. There was dust rising high above the herd and the sound of animals bleating, braying, snorting was riveting. Eventually, the lines of animals started to break down as some individuals started to jump from higher river banks at great risk to themselves. When this individual leapt I panned my camera to follow his/her landing. But, not knowing how deep the river was, I was very surprised when the landing created a high column of muddy water. I hope the viewer takes away the resilience of wildebeest and the dangers they face regularly to reach optimal foraging areas.
