I do my best to respect wildlife by watching their body language: are they comfortable with my presence? Are they comfortable with my camera gear even though I am shooting silently with mirrorless? I consider it a Lifetime Gift when an animal indicates he/she is willing to have me in their space. I sit quietly and savor the moments until they depart. If an animal decides to shorten the distance between me and them by walking towards me I quickly evaluate the safety of the new parameters. Should I slowly move back and risk startling the animal or trigger a run response or should I remain where I am? It all comes down to the tolerance of the individual animal and what my guide feels is safe. No where in the world that I have visited over the past few decades, have I met an animal the size of Craig, capable of doing great damage, be as tolerant as this towering elephant. After a period of time when I thought my legs were going to break, he walked towards me and right by me on his way to another patch of grass.
