Winds over 40 knots/hour pummel the beach creating sand blast and rough surf. This group of Kings appears to have decided its best to wait for better conditions before entering the sea. Winds over 40 knots/hour closed all the ports of the Falkland Islands on this day. As a result, I had the beach entirely to myself in some of the "best" worst conditions I could have asked for. I wrapped my camera gear very carefully before setting out and closed everything in the waterproof bag I rely on. I also had on protective eye wear and covered my entire face. The blowing sand was relentless and made it impossible for me to stand. I took cover behind dunes and knelt down to avoid getting knocked over by gusts. As long as my camera was pointed in alignment with the wind direction I could shoot. The lines in the sand created by wind were superb compositional elements. I specifically worked to capture both the leading lines of the sand and an angry surf to share the story of the conditions. Eventually, I had to quit because my Canon R5 camera became inoperable. Too many fine grains of sand lodged between the function buttons and the body but no worries, I had 2 other back up cameras with me waiting at the lodge ready for the next day! What surprises me about this moment was how the King penguins handled the ferocity of the storm. Many of them were being blown over but would just pop back up and get back into their line up. I hope the viewer takes away the raw nature of the scene, what penguins face in their environment and a keen appreciation for how rugged this species is.
