A female ostrich finished her dust bath and was laying quietly in the sand. We had arrived in our safari vehicle just in time to see the end of the dust bath. After what seemed like a long time, I said out loud to my guide, "do you think she'll move soon?" No sooner did I say that when the ostrich leapt up and was out of view in 3 long strides. I was amazed at her speed. My guide explained it was likely that the ostrich sensed a predator approaching which prompted her lightening change of behavior. To get the shot, I was using a bean bag on the jeep window ledge for support.
