Warning Cry

A North American Loon screams out a piercing warning cry to any raptors that may be in the area. The male was part of a breeding pair whose chicks had hatched the day before. Both parents were on high alert to protect their vulnerable chicks. I was on a small platform boat equipped with electric motors for quiet maneuvering. I used a 600mm lens with a 2xTC at 1200mm to zoom in for tight shot and laid on my stomach for the low angle view. The Common Loon (Gavia immer) has a variety of vocalizations. In this image, the male was sounding a warning cry to alert his mate and protect his young chicks against an eagle flying overhead. This call is also known as a yodel. Fun Fact: The Common Loon appears on Canadian currency including the one-dollar coin also known as the "loonie"!
