The harsh conditions of the Namib Desert emphasize the fragile balance between prey and predator. Predators must search over vast arid territory in search of prey. This male oryx was a significant kill for the desert-adapted lioness. Its meat and blood provide vital sustenance for her and her sub adult cub for several days. Note the satellite collar on the lioness; this is a highly endangered species that is monitored by local scientists.
