The Omega Wolf

Wolves are social animals and it was a surprise to come upon this lone wolf. This male may have been expelled by the pack or dispersed on his own because of reaching sexual maturity. He had been seen in the area several times at close range. One day I was hiking with several other photographers and he trotted towards us. We immediately came to a halt as he approached. He was relaxed and inspected us briefly but was more interested quenching his thirst in a nearby melting ice puddle. He trotted off without a backward glance. This lone wolf paused briefly while trotting across the tundra to drink from an ice slick. There was enough moisture from the ice to provide the drinking water he needed to satisfy his thirst.
